News for August 30 — US COVID Hospitalizations Continue Rise

US COVID hospitalizations continue rise: https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2023-08-29/u-s-covid-19-hospitalizations-increase-for-6th-straight-week .

WSJ: Female surgeons outperform men: https://www.wsj.com/health/wellness/female-surgeons-get-better-results-than-male-counterparts-7ba9b9c2 . Resistance of the male hierarchy is futile, as well as hurting patients.

Alzheimer’s research identifies new suspect: https://www.sciencealert.com/brain-autopsies-reveal-potential-new-culprit-behind-alzheimers-disease .

FDA warns baby formula makers: https://www.aol.com/news/us-fda-issues-warning-letters-203424541.html . Really, do these people know what business they’re in? Reputation is everything here. Getting a warning from the Feds is hardly going to encourage new parents to use their products. Mozart reduces newborn test pain: https://www.aol.com/lifestyle/mozart-may-ease-pain-newborns-070000222.html .

Scientists may have found a cure for alcoholism: https://www.indy100.com/science-tech/alcohol-addiction-gene-therapy-2664644352 . There are real questions about converting the success with monkeys to humans. However, further research is most certainly warranted.

WSJ: More bad news for China’s economy: https://www.wsj.com/world/china/chinas-economy-shows-fresh-signs-of-weakness-in-factories-consumer-spending-ad46fa8a .

Gabon coup: https://www.aol.com/news/gabonese-military-officers-announce-seized-050347336.html . Instability increases in West Africa. There is widespread belief that Bongo fixed the election, as he is unpopular with the public. The question is whether the military will restore democracy or retain power. Hurricane Idalia hammers Florida: https://www.aol.com/news/hurricane-idalia-flood-wind-damage-185059365.html . Some believe the large storm surge was accentuated by the super blue moon. To be clear, a blue moon is the second full moon in a month. On average, a blue moon occurs about every two years. The blue aspect has nothing to do with tides (or color). A super moon occurs when the Moon is closest to Earth in its orbit, which occurs every 2 to 3 years. This one just happened during a hurricane coming ashore.

WSJ: Ukraine’s snipers: https://www.wsj.com/world/ukraines-elite-snipers-fight-russians-bullet-by-bullet-3e84db9d . Meanwhile, Ukraine’s drone strikes are growing in effectiveness and targeting: https://www.wsj.com/world/europe/ukrainian-drones-strike-deep-inside-russia-hitting-military-airfield-other-targets-e42ca54 .

Letitia James hammers Orange Julius on inflated assets: https://abcnews.go.com/US/trump-inflated-net-worth-22-billion-nyag-filing/story?id=102795013 . James describes the evidence as undisputed, and that is probably a fair characterization. Also, of course OJ inflated his assets – he’s a self-inflated ass. In any event, this is fraud. OJ’s attorneys could argue that this is common practice in the real estate industry (!), but that’s highly questionable and does not represent a defense to this crime.

Rudy Giuliani – the Rude Dude is Screwed, Blued and Tattooed: https://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/4178903-giuliani-loses-georgia-election-worker-defamation-suit-by-default-judge-rules/ . “Cash crunch” is not the proper description. Rudy will likely be bankrupted by his current legal troubles. However, as readers know, the Georgia election fraud case offers a 5 year minimum prison sentence which is mandatory. So soon enough Rudy will have his room and board paid for by Georgia taxpayers. More from The Washington Post: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/giuliani-s-first-big-legal-loss-is-a-blistering-one/ar-AA1g0KAT?ocid=hpmsn&cvid=e0092c8543b94ecd8333b94823d4920e&ei=18 . Could Mark Meadows escape to federal court?: https://www.salon.com/2023/08/30/legal-experts-judges-order-in-mark-meadows-case-could-be-very-news-for-fani-willis/ . The judge’s question raises a technical issue on which he has requested briefing. The central point to me is that the judge has concluded that some of the conduct is outside the scope of Meadows’ office, which means Meadows would still be convicted in federal court. However, as the article suggests, Willis could ask the grand jury for a superseding indictment which drops the conduct believed to be within the scope of Meadows’ duties.

Mitch McConnell health scare repeat: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/sen-mitch-mcconnell-appears-freeze-kentucky-event-rcna102583 . Mitch says he will see a doctor before his next episode. He can’t know that unless he suspends press conferences for the time being. He didn’t have a detailed neurological work-up after the first episode? This is obviously much more than light-headedness. WSJ: More: https://www.wsj.com/us-news/mitch-mcconnell-freezes-again-in-press-appearance-ff01dcff .

Another January 6 “genius” charged: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/justice-department/capitol-rioter-bragged-took-white-house-charged-lying-fbi-rcna102607 . This guy is part of a larger group of “geniuses” who each claimed they took the White House on January 6. This reminded me that January 6 is known as Epiphany, as in “These geniuses are now having an Epiphany about prison time”.

Speaking of “geniuses”, Peter Navarro heads to trial over contempt of Congress: https://news.yahoo.com/judge-rules-against-peter-navarro-005345995.html . As you sow, so shall you reap.

Sam Bankman-Fried’s attorneys say they are unable to prepare for trial: https://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/4179484-sam-bankman-fried-attorneys-say-they-are-unable-to-adequately-prepare-for-trial/ . I am skeptical of this motion. The attorneys face an uphill battle with the judge here. You can put a ton of info on a flash drive. Wouldn’t this allow SBF access to the evidence without requiring access to the Internet? UPDATE: The judge is more than skeptical: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/exasperated-judge-wants-postponement-request-184456947.html .

Alex Murdaugh’s life in prison: https://apnews.com/article/alex-murdaugh-prison-phone-call-discipline-9116af80dbc4e486d76907fb7494a2b8 . Looking forward to more prison news in the future concerning the January 6 gang.
