News for October 31 — Trump the Super-spreader

Trump the super-spreader: https://www.politico.com/news/2020/10/31/trump-study-coronavirus-rallies-433760 (link replaced 11/3/21). I’m not fond of health or mortality studies done by economists. I don’t doubt that Trump rallies have been super-spreaders. However, an alternate explanation for the data cited is that Trump holds rallies where his support is strong. Those areas are the ones where people don’t wear masks in public.

Record early voting continues: https://electproject.github.io/Early-Vote-2020G/index.html . As of 11:59 pm Eastern 10/31, 91.2 million votes have been cast, 58.1 million by mail and 33.1 million in person. For states reporting party affiliation, 20.3 million Democrats and 13.4 million Republicans have voted. However, the Democratic advantage has dipped slightly to 6.9 million from yesterday’s 7.0 million.

Projections have been that 150 to 160 million will vote in this year’s election. Even at 160 million, 91.2 million represents 57% of the total vote, with 2 days to go before Election Day. WSJ: More or less: https://www.wsj.com/articles/mail-balloting-is-fueling-historic-early-voting-in-the-2020-election-11602591220 . This is “more or less” because WSJ just updates this article every day. But they don’t do a stellar job. For example, according to WSJ, early voting in Wisconsin opens Tuesday. As far as I know, that’s Election Day.
