News for July 27

Most of the world will face COVID-19 without a vaccine: Klaus Stohr: https://www.bloombergquint.com/coronavirus-outbreak/covid-most-of-world-to-face-virus-without-vaccine-expert-says .

Duration of vaccine protection: https://www.wsj.com/articles/a-big-unknown-in-covid-19-vaccine-development-how-long-will-protection-last-11595755802 .

Details of Republican relief offer: https://www.politico.com/news/2020/07/27/senate-gop-coronavirus-relief-package-382502 . So far, the only bill out there is the Heroes Act passed by the House in May. Mnuchin has been talking about paying 70% of prior wages, but that seems very difficult to administer; maybe that’s why this offer is at $200. That, together with unemployment if any, will not pay the rent. More: WSJ: https://www.wsj.com/articles/gop-to-release-coronavirus-aid-proposal-after-delay-11595860826 . WSJ: Gottlieb on a diagnostic stockpile: https://www.wsj.com/articles/covid-shows-the-need-for-a-diagnostic-stockpile-11595795375 . Opinion, but a reasoned one.

WSJ: Will Texas shut down?: https://www.wsj.com/articles/will-texas-shut-down-again-amid-surge-in-covid-19-cases-11595669400 .

WSJ: The “upside” of the US surge: https://www.wsj.com/articles/surging-covid-19-cases-in-u-s-other-countries-could-speed-up-vaccine-studies-11595842201 .

WSJ: Their take on testing restrictions: https://www.wsj.com/video/why-some-states-are-narrowing-access-to-covid-19-tests/7D590227-0D42-4381-8EF8-DBCC80C2410C.html . 2 minutes, not very helpful, but it provides a bit of insight into WSJ thinking here, which is important given they are our primary source.

WSJ: Manhattan workers returning VERY slowly: https://www.wsj.com/articles/one-month-later-few-manhattan-office-workers-have-returned-despite-new-yorks-reopening-11595847600 . There is the potential here that Manhattan will be permanently changed in a significant way.

WSJ: Virus resurges in Asia and South Pacific: https://www.wsj.com/articles/coronavirus-is-back-with-a-vengeance-in-places-where-it-had-all-but-vanished-11595842202 . Contact tracing, testing and isolation is difficult, but obviously a far better place to be than having the virus imbedded in the population as has occurred in the US and South America.

WSJ: Surge in South Africa: https://www.wsj.com/articles/after-early-success-south-africa-buckles-under-coronavirus-surge-11595779200 .

WSJ: North Korea’s first reported case: https://www.wsj.com/articles/north-korea-reports-its-first-apparent-covid-19-case-11595722635 .

WSJ: Debt trap, part 2: https://www.wsj.com/articles/covid-coronavirus-developing-nation-africa-debt-crisis-11595455147 .

WSJ: Wells Fargo to cut staff, others likely to follow: https://www.wsj.com/articles/wells-fargo-tightens-purse-strings-to-ride-out-coronavirus-pandemic-11595669400 . In thinking about the$200 versus $600, remember that the US has had 17 straight weeks of more than 1 million unemployment claims (previously high was 650,000), and job opportunities continue to shrink.

WSJ: Yikes!: https://www.wsj.com/articles/sinclair-postpones-controversial-show-about-coronavirus-11595797999 . The power of intellectual discrimination must certainly apply here; this goes beyond “incredibly controversial”. Suggesting that masks activate the virus is a public health danger, the modern day equivalent of yelling fire in a crowded theater (actually worse, because Sinclair broadcasts nationwide). After the federal court in Portland restrained Portland Police from attacking journalists and legal observers, the federal agents did the same thing. I didn’t realize the severity of the second round of attacks until reading the plaintiffs’ brief after the attack requesting the court to also restrain the federal agents. Here is the brief, I suggest you look at the photos on pages 12 and 13 of 25 (titled in blue at top) and then read pages 11-14. https://aclu-or.org/sites/default/files/field_documents/index_newspapers_-_tro_against_feds.pdf . I’m not shocked by much, but this really drove home how badly these untrained agents are behaving.
